Marius Hills Moon Mission Target Landing Site

100 years ago Ernest Shackleton posted this ad for his expedition to traverse Antarctica. Thousands responded. And even a century later, this ad is still appropriate for our own exploration plans -

A Crewed Mission to the Moon.

44 years ago, Neil Armstong and Buzz Aldrin (Apollo 11) became the first men to walk on the moon. Less than 4 years later, Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt (Apollo 17) were the last. It's been nearly 40 years since the last crewed moon mission. It's time to go back.

Rima Marius plans to do just that.

Watch the video here.

Named for the region of the moon that is our objective, Rima Marius has assembled a group of experts and space enthusiasts dedicated to successfully undertaking the first private crewed moon mission. Our target is the Marius Pit, a deep hole in the Marius Hills region in Oceanus Procellarum. 65 meters in diameter and perhaps 90 meters deep, the Marius Pit is a possible entry into a collapsed lava tube and maybe even a subsurface cavern - which makes it a prime candidate for a permanently crewed lunar base.

Can we really plan and finance a private lunar expedition? Nearly 100 years ago, Shackleton, Scott, and Amundsen found ways to fund their polar expeditions using both private and public funding. There is no reason similar efforts couldn't be used to support space exploration today.

Through a unique combination of innovative engineering and technical development, and in conjunction with proven financing models, we believe we can return to the moon in just a few short years. But it all begins with assembling the right people and the right team.

In early 2014 we will begin a global search for those who want to go to the moon, who actually want to step foot on the surface of another world. We need bold, creative individuals who want to be a part of shaping the future of private space exploration and want to be a part of our team. We need astronauts totally addicted to advancing the human element of space exploration. And while we can't promise everything will be perfect, we can promise it will be exciting.

It's time to go back to the moon.
